Stormdrum 3 was recorded using only the best vintage Neumann microphones, for that unmistakable Hollywood sound. Combined with this great sounding room is the equipment. Stormdrum 3 was recorded at Studio 1 of Eastwest Studios - one of the greatest sounding percussion studios, anywhere. This avoids time-stretching the samples when the tempo is changed, so the quality of the instrument stays impactful and clean, with no artefacts. The PLAY Engine also has a built sequence tempo. Transitioning from a peaceful section to an impactful beat has never been easier, and it will fool people into thinking it was never composed on a computer. This attention to detail will not only give a performance a frighteningly 'real' character, but through the PLAY Engine allows for some handy settings, such as changing the dynamics of the whole performance on the fly. There are multiple round robins, with 24 velocity samples for each sound, so dynamically this is one of the most diverse percussion libraries out there. This basically allows the user to control each element separately - mute or edit certain tracks as if they were all recorded separately.
When the need arises, there is the option to 'unpack' this data stream into its individual parts, to allow for complete control over the instrument. The benefit of this is that it keeps workflow clean, and is great for dropping in a beat or single hit without getting too technical. This means that 16 tracks of MIDI data are compressed into one single stream.
The MIDI in Stormdrum 3 is in type 0 file format. As with the previous versions, there are a whole load of MIDI performances, with variations that can be edited to perfection. This essentially determines how hard or soft the velocity has to be before the sound changes from soft to impactful. Another addition is the inclusion of a 'sensitivity' envelope. This is a great tool for adding or detracting weight and impact from a sound, while still retaining its sonic character. One of these is a tuning section, which allows for the pitching of the sound. In Stormdrum3, there are a few new features however. Stormdrum 3 is again powered by the PLAY Engine. This library includes a whopping 86GB of 24bit samples, the most of any previous Stormdrum libraries by a huge margin, and again was produced by Nick Phoenix, composer for the legendary production company 'Two Steps From Hell', and Stormdrum 1 & 2.
